The Vital Importance of Life Purpose
I am still meeting people who have not clarified their Life Purpose. And what I see in them is frustration and stress. Frustration, because they know they are not living their best life. They have goals and dreams within them that they are not fulfilling. And living without a clear purpose is stressful, because trying to navigate through the difficulties of life without a clear direction is immensely difficult. Like a boat out at sea, with a crew of one who has no idea where the nearest safe port or harbour is. With no clear direction, the storms of life carry us to destinations that we don’t like, places where we don’t want to be.
Finding and following a Life Purpose is very similar to navigating a boat successfully across a vast ocean, getting through storms as quickly as possible, and arriving at a safe harbour.
People say to me, “Yes, but what if the harbour turns out to be not a desired destination? What if we get it wrong, and follow the wrong purpose?” Well, life is all about a journey of learning and becoming. You will be stronger and wiser for the navigated journey across the ocean. If you drift, and allow the weather to knock you around, you may not gain anything other than confusion and hurt.
Finding and living your Life Purpose is a vital part of developing the kind of mental resilience that is needed in today’s world.
So how to find one’s Life Purpose?
There are many mistakes that people make in trying to establish their Life Purpose. The first mistake is usually that people are in a tremendous hurry to nominate the ONE thing that their life should be focused on. While this is a commendable aim (and yes, your first Purpose is to find your Life Purpose) it can be too demanding to immediately come up with a precise and final answer to this vital question. The most productive thing to do is to find the general area in which you feel motivated. And ask yourself what your general skills and abilities are. The meeting of your strong interests, and your skills, is where you will find your Life Purpose.
There is more to it, of course. I have accumulated a number of methods for finding and clarifying a person’s Life Purpose. Some of them can be done in one session. Others take several weeks to complete. Whatever method is used, I always want to be sure that we have got it right. In my coaching approach, once a person has found or clarified their Life Purpose, we work out an entire Life Plan based on it.
The principles of Ikigai are very much integrated into everything I do regarding Life Purpose. There is a fabulous Zone we can get into, where our passions, our sense of purpose, and our skills combine with our career path, meaning that we never ‘work’ for a single day in our life, we simply engage with what we love doing, each and every day.
Finding your Life Purpose IS a vital exercise, because following a Life Purpose will usually be the governing factor in the two main areas of our life…(1 ) What we pursue as a career, and the money and success we find through our work. (2) Who we meet and marry or otherwise devote our lives to.
Part of my approach is to help you sort out your current difficulties, get relief from any current stress, sort out any current confusions. Clearing the path to finding your Life Purpose, and your Authentic Self.
Contact me for a discussion on this, and perhaps a free session. In which we can begin to clear your current difficulties to some degree. Make it easier for you to see a way forward. Or we can do an interview, to help you to see what is causing the patterns in your life.
